Google: A powerful sense of mission...

In the years since the dot-com industry crashed, firms such as pets.com and wine.com vanished, leaving behind lost dreams and abandoned offices. But the Internet has also spawned some remarkable success stories, such as the search engine company called Google.

The vision for Google got started back in 1995, when Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two 22 year old PhD students at Stanford University, teamed up together on a research project to create a better form of internet search. They tell the story of how it all began with an argument, and how they both found each other to be utterly obnoxious. Fortunately, they managed to get past their differences, and continued to work together to research the search engine called Back Rub.

When their work and research started to look promising and full of possibilities, they considered spending all their time perfecting their new software, and seeing if they could get it out into the real world. However, they were not sure they wanted to go through the travails of starting and running a company.

Brin remembers speaking with his adviser, who told him, "Look, if this Google thing pans out, then great. If not, you can return to graduate school and finish your thesis." He chuckles, then adds: "I said, 'Yeah, OK, why not? I'll just give it a try."

Although this may sound like a rather flippant response, there was one key difference between these two young men and others who had been willing to just give it the "old college try."

Larry Page and Sergi Brin saw the magnitude of what they were capable of creating, the ultimate vision of what they could accomplish and dedicated everything they had to this mission. It's nothing less than this...

Google's mission is to index all of the information in the known universe and make it instantly available at the click of a button.

This has remained the guiding vision of Google to this day.

The domain google.com was not even registered until September 1997, and the company Google, Inc. itself was not incorporated until September of 1998. Today, Google is the top search engine with over fifty percent market share. It is one of the top three most visited websites in the world.

Over four billion searches are conducted every month on it. It has localized websites for over 150 countries. There are over 117 language options to view your Google page in. This search engine is supported by a backend of over 800,000 servers.

Larry and Sergei initially received startup venture capital of $100,000. The growth in terms of employees, search queries and revenues along with additional products and services has increased, but their mission has always remained focused on search improvement. Over 100 Million searches were being conducted daily by 2000.

They started their advertising programs AdWords and AdSense in 2002-03. They went public in 2004 with an initial public offering in USA and raised $1.67 Billion. They formed major partnerships with NASA & AOL in 2005. The Google stock was added to S&P 500 index in 2006. The company employment crossed 10,000 employees in 2007. The graph of Google has only been going up. As of 2011, the market cap is around $200 Billion.

Today Larry and Sergei are multi billionaires, and still, they like to emphasize that they want to continue to develop the best tool for conducting searches ever, and continue their mission to move towards that vision.

When you have a strong mission, your vision will continue to grow and grow and grow.

Solid Gold Performance...

It starts with High Expectations and then delivers Brilliant Execution. Larry and Sergei combined the two perfectly and delivered world-class results.

"You know what it's like to wake up in the middle of the night with a vivid dream? And you know that if you don't have a pencil and pad by the bed, it will be completely gone by the next morning. Sometimes it's important to wake up and stop dreaming. When a really great dream shows up, grab it!" ~ Larry Page
