Curves: The Story behind the story...

In the business coaching industry, frequently we work with people who believe that they cannot succeed because of an unfortunate event in their past or some other personal reason. "I am not the right age, the right gender, or color. I was abused when I was a kid. My parents did not love me. I never had an advantage in life. Nobody ever liked me. I was in a bad accident. I grew up in the wrong neighborhood. I was no good in school. I could never get the right education. I was homeless for much of my life. I have an illness. I don't have any money. I am no good at this or that, or whatever."

We certainly do not want to downplay the often distressing reality of such emotional difficulties in life, but the fact of the matter is, "OK. So now what?!"

These responses are excuses based on fear. The best supportive response to such an excuse is, "So what?" What are you going to do now? Everybody has a story from their past. What are you going to do instead of allowing past experiences or situations get in the way of living a life of passion on purpose?"

Here is a story about a boy named Gary Heavin, who experienced a serious tragedy when he was 13 years old. Gary found his mother dead in her bed when he was 13 years old. His mom died of a blood clot caused by high blood pressure, that scores of prescribed medications failed to cure.

He grew up with a decision to either allow a tragedy from his childhood hold him back, or to make a conscientious effort to turn that tragedy into an amazing triumph. Gary certainly could have been like so many other people and dwelled on his tragedy and allowed it to keep him down and depressed for his whole life.

Today, Gary talks about how health conditions can be alleviated with effective exercise and proper nutrition. With this knowledge and a tragic past to drive him forward, Gary and his wife Diane created an exercise dynasty just for women, so that as he puts it, "hopefully no other little boy would ever have to wake up in the morning to find his mom passed away."

Gary and Diane opened their first Curves exercise club exclusively for women back in 1992. A central focus of their success is their 30 minute fitness and strength training, weight loss guidance program to maintain women's health. They are dedicated to helping women live a long time to love those who matter most to them. Eventually, they franchised their business concept and today Curves can make the claim to be one of the top 10 largest franchise companies in the world.

Today, Curves is an incredible business success story with more than 10,000 locations worldwide, bringing in an estimated $2.6 Billion or more every year. It continues to be the safe haven that Gary and Diane envisioned for women to feel comfortable while exercising for health, fitness and greater longevity.

The Curves success story is about improving the health of women, and it is also a story about one little boy's tragedy turned into a fantastic triumph. Not only for himself and his own family, but for other little boys or girls and their moms — all around the world.
